ABOUT STEPHEN VOLAN

Stephen Volan was elected to the Sixth District seat on the Bloomington City Council in 2003, and this year serves as its Vice-President. He also represents the City Council on the board of directors of the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District.

Steve is the owner of The Cinemat video store and screening room/live-performance venue in downtown Bloomington. He is also an instructor in the Indiana University College of Arts & Sciences, where he teaches a course called "Introduction to Chess."

In 1995, he founded BlueMarble Information Services, the first company to provide Internet access in Bloomington. The company, still known as bluemarble.net, is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Smithville Telephone Company.

Steve has been a volunteer on-air music-mix programmer at community radio station WFHB since its first year on the air in 1993. You can listen to him during "Siren Songs," the first part of WFHB's Afternoon Music Mix, every Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00pm Eastern Time (-0400 or -0500 UT).

Steve also helped found the Lotus World Music & Arts Festival in 1994, and served on its board of directors from 1994 to 2000. He has been a stage emcee at each annual festival since year one.

In 1990 Steve published The Right Foot, a 250-page guidebook for new students at Indiana University that ran to five editions. Steve at long, long last completed his Bachelor of General Studies from Indiana University Bloomington in May 2007. (His parents, George and Helen Volan, were so proud that they bronzed his diploma.) He has lived in Bloomington since 1986. From 1983 until then he attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (PA).

He is a 1983 graduate of Andrean High School in Merrillville. He was born in 1965 in Gary.
