Subject: [Artdepart] Angela Volan
Dear friends and colleagues,
With great sadness, we write to inform you of the passing of our beloved
friend and fellow scholar, Angela Volan. Angela died peacefully in her
sleep on the night of Saturday, June 24th. Although in life she was
reserved about the details of her health, Angela suffered from heart
problems as a result of Marfan's Syndrome, a condition that affects the
connective tissue of the body. The complications from this condition
resulted in a number of heart surgeries over the past years, the first
of which occurred when Angela was only 24 years old. In May, Angela
underwent open-heart surgery for the third time. She was recuperating at
home with her family when she passed away.
Angela received her Ph.D. from our department in 2005 with a
dissertation directed by Rob Nelson on late and post-Byzantine
apocalyptic imagery. She spent the past year as a post-doctoral fellow
at the Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University, and was
looking forward to taking up an assistant professorship this fall on the
faculty of the Art History Department at the University of South Florida
in Tampa.
This terrible news has come as a great shock to all of us. Angela
herself preferred that people not define her by this condition. Knowing
now what she lived with heightens an appreciation for the amount she
accomplished in her short 35 years.
There will be a wake and a funeral held for Angela this week in
Merrillville, Indiana. The service itself will be held this Thursday at
11:00 am at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in
Merrillville, IN, which is about a 45-minute drive from the south side
of Chicago. There will also be a wake the evening before on Wednesday
from 4 to 8 pm at Geisen Funeral Home, also in Merrillville.

Angela's family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, any donations in her
name be to one of the following two charities that she felt strongly about.

charity work he was doing in that part of the world.

Volan, and the rest of the Volan family at:
